Monitoring Our Thoughts

So far in this Healing Series, we have discussed how we tend to blame others for our mistakes, the importance of evaluating our lives periodically, learning how to take care of ourselves and our needs first (which we will be discussing more in-depth in a future column), and how we tend to distract ourselves by thinking of others and keeping our minds busy with extraneous activities. I suggested that you let your mind work on your own healing, instead of letting it find its own problems to solve. This week, I want to talk about something else you can do to make your mind work for you, instead of against you.

We've all heard the saying, "You move towards that which you think about". This is very true. We have to think about that which improves our lives, brings about our own healing, and brings positivity into our lives.

We all have lots of random thoughts that run around in our heads all day long. What are they about? Worrying about something, usually money, or another person and what they might be up to, or about things we need to do that day.

How does any of this help you? It doesn't. We have already discussed how worrying is a distraction. Instead, think about what you can do to solve the problem, look for a solution, and once you find it, leave the thought alone, don't think about it any more. Thinking about others and their problems is another distraction, even worrying about what a significant other is up to is a way of distracting ourselves from thinking about ourselves. The point is, what can you do about it besides worry? Nothing. So let it go. When you are thinking about everything you need to get done in a day, then make a list and you can let it all go.

Now, do we have our minds clear and uncluttered? Good! Let's replace all of that with positive thought. Think of some affirmations that are significant to your life. "I will not think negative thoughts". "I am a positive person". "I have compassion for everyone in my circle". "I am fortunate to have a full life with many friends, enough money to see me through, and a job I love". What? You don't have a job you love? Well that's what the power of positive thinking can do for you!

Don't just think about those things that are already in your life, think about what you want to bring into your life. And think about it as if it is already there. "I have a job I love". "I make enough money to live comfortably". See yourself in a job you love as you do this. See yourself living comfortably, in the home of your dreams. See yourself healed, whole, healthy.

Different things are important to each of us, so you must put your own affirmations into place here. Do it one step at a time. "I am working towards healing myself so that I may heal others". Then, "I am healed, and am ready to help to heal others". And later on, "I have an abundance of healthy, healed, whole friends in my life".

You can do affirmations for several things at once. For instance, your home life, your friends, your healing, and money issues, all at one time. Take baby steps. See how it would look to have these steps already in place in your life. You know it will be a process, so work with that. One step at a time. Rome was not built in a day.

Next time you begin worrying about something, turn it around. If you are thinking how am I going to pay that bill, think instead, "I have the money I need to pay all my bills". At the same time, this does not give us an excuse to be wasteful either. We know that material things are not what is important in this life, so cut out unnecessary expenses. This will give you the money to do things that are more important to you. Work with the process, don't try to overload it.

Excess, in any area, is not healthy. Remember, we must visit each of our four houses each and every day, to stay balanced. That's our Mental house, our Physical house, our Emotional house, and our Spiritual house. So work on thinking positive towards a goal in each of your four houses. And work on them equally.

We also have to work on this in the physical realm as well. We can't say we have all the money we need, and sit at home doing nothing and expect it to fall into our laps. However, if that is what is important to you, then you will begin looking for a way to accomplish it. That is what these affirmations are all about. Turning your thoughts around so that you are thinking positively about yourself and your life, to give yourself the positive energy needed to make the necessary changes in your life. You will be more open to the opportunities that come your way, when you are thinking positively. These positive affirmations make sure the opportunities arise, and that you are ready for them when they do. This will be explained a bit more when we talk about Manifestation, in a future column. Right now, we are just getting ourselves ready by beginning to think positively about ourselves and our lives, all the time.

The other part of this is that if you are thinking negatively, you will bring negative energy into your life. On the other hand, if you are thinking positively, you surround yourself with positive energy. Don't let your thoughts stray into the negative realm, as that will affect everything in your life in a negative manner.

When we begin monitoring our thoughts, we begin to realize that each and every thing we think about, affects us in some way. Notice how your thoughts affect you, and how they are affecting your life. When you begin to think of something negative, stop it, immediately, and turn it around. "I am happy and healthy". Keep one affirmation like that handy to insert anytime, anywhere, to replace those negative thoughts with, when necessary.

This will take some time to accomplish. Our minds still want to distract us by making us think about problems that they can solve. Don't worry about it if it takes your a while to turn all of your thoughts around, just keep working on it, all the time. Once you have accomplished this, you will see how things have improved in your life. You may have to make some changes in your life to get yourself into a healthy situation so that you can heal and work on yourself. Nothing worthwhile is ever easy, but healing ourselves is definitely worth it. We are worth it. Take some time and work on you, make the changes necessary so that you can. It's all a process. One step at a time.
